Santos has always had a heart for helping others, starting with her work in EMS. Driven by a desire to make a difference, she transitioned into Early Childhood Education, a choice that has directly shaped her current role as a Special Education Teacher for students in kindergarten through third grade. Her journey reflects not only her dedication but also her ability to persevere through challenges and find balance in a rewarding career.
Before she ever stepped into a classroom, Santos knew she wanted to teach children—especially those at risk—so they wouldn’t end up in dangerous situations. Her time in EMS inspired this passion for teaching, which led her to pursue a degree in Early Childhood Education.
Her first teaching experience came quickly after completing student teaching, as she stepped in to take over a third-grade class mid-year after the teacher retired. It was a challenge, but one that set the tone for her resilient approach to teaching. Over the next two years, she taught first grade—a grade she now calls one of the best to teach.
However, the road wasn’t always smooth. Santos’ first year was especially challenging, as she joined mid-year and faced a class of struggling students. Despite these difficulties, she never felt alone. Her colleagues, a supportive and dedicated team, were instrumental in helping her navigate the hurdles of that first year. She credits their unwavering support as essential to her success.
Through those early challenges, Santos learned one of her most valuable lessons: it’s impossible to do everything. She understood the need to focus on what truly mattered, something that not only helped her grow as a teacher but also enabled her to maintain balance in her life.
“You can’t do everything. It’s important to prioritize, delegate and sometimes just to let some things go,” Santos explains.
The greatest reward in her job, however, is the students. Every day, they brighten her day with their laughter, compliments, and sometimes even a hug. It’s these moments that make her job truly fulfilling.
Santos knows the importance of work-life balance. She maintains firm boundaries with her time, ensuring she doesn’t take work home, believing it’s essential to be fair to her family. Her dedication during work hours is matched by her commitment to self-care, which she prioritizes through regular workouts at the gym—her main stress reliever—and unwinding with a good book afterward.
When Santos first began her college journey, she envisioned herself teaching pre-K or kindergarten, but with time, she found that she thrived in other grades. Although she sometimes wonders if she’s brave enough for the youngest students, she is incredibly grateful for the perseverance and determination that carried her through the challenges of college and student teaching, leading her to the rewarding parts of her career today.
Santos’ journey is one of unwavering perseverance, balance, and impactful teaching. Her story serves as a reminder that with dedication, support, and self-care, we can overcome obstacles and make a lasting difference in the lives of those we teach.
