SOAR Into College With an Exciting Summer Start

Registration for Student Orientation and Registration Sessions Now Open

A clear sign of transition from high school to college is summer orientation. At McMurry University, it is an engaging and informative event for both students and parents. Student Orientation and Registration (SOAR) welcomes incoming students, including transfer students, and their families, to register for one of the summer sessions.

“Set in the newly opened reimagined and expanded Garrison Campus Center, SOAR will promote initial community building and the logistics of joining the McMurry campus,” said Mariah Fusco, assistant dean of students for student engagement.

Channel your inner Olympian vibes with McMurry Olympics. This year’s theme will set the stage for this adventure of a lifetime, known as college. SOAR differs from Welcome Week because it is an intentional opportunity to see what life will be like in college, solidify what campus offers, and how you can contribute.

What Do We Do?

Students and parents have their own welcome sessions, attend joint sessions throughout the afternoon, and then students have an opportunity to connect with each other through engaging activities in the evening.

At SOAR, you and your family will:

Students

Students stay in the dorm for the first time and can begin thinking about what to bring/not bring to your new home away from home. You can connect with future classmates through varied activities including volleyball and card games. When you return for Welcome Week, you’ll already see some friendly faces you met at SOAR.

“It’s amazing how students start to build community with each other in just one night. Some people come to SOAR and find their roommate by getting to know each other at activities,” said Fusco.

Parents

“Parents have a lot of great questions. We’re happy to answer them, because we want you to feel confident about all aspects of your child’s college experience and be excited to be a part of the McMurry campus,” said Fusco.

Parents are encouraged not to be shy about asking questions because your question could be on someone else’s mind too. SOAR gives parents insight into student success, the TRIO program, dining, security, and what students need to do to prepare to enter McMurry. It also covers key McMurry events like Family Weekend, Homecoming, and the ring ceremony.

“We encourage parents to attend because you can get a strong sense of McMurry and be assured that your child is in a place that will nurture them, take care of them, and enable them to reach their greatest potential,” said Fusco.

Session Dates

The first three sessions are overnight, but if that is not an option for you, a one-day session is available. If you are unable to attend any of the sessions, please talk with your admissions counselor. There is dedicated time at Welcome Week to talk with Financial Aid and register for classes.

You can register and learn more on our web page.  We look forward to seeing you on campus.
