(Abilene, Texas – Aug. 9, 2023) – McMurry University is sending four representatives to the Parliament of World’s Religions Conference in Chicago, IL this month. Rev. Dr. Philip LeMasters, Professor of Religion and Director of the Honors Program, and Dr. Mark Waters, Professor of Religion and Division Chair of Humanities, Religion, and Social Sciences will be presenting papers at the conference.

The Parliament meets every few years and draws up to ten thousand people from approximately 80 countries representing over 200 religious, spiritual, indigenous, and humanist traditions. This will be LeMasters’ third trip to the conference and Waters’ fourth trip.

“Because I teach Religions of the World, I’m always looking to learn something new about each religion,” Waters said. “Moreover, learning about each religion enriches me not only in teaching about different faiths, but also as a Christian theologian.”

Waters will present “Navigating Obstacles: Interfaith Work in the Buckle of the Bible Belt” along with Linda Goolsbee and Dr. Angela Nicolini Starr of the Abilene Interfaith Council. LeMasters will present “Human Rights and the Quest for Peace in Orthodox Christianity.”

The conference is from August 14 – 18. Other speakers at the event include Senator Nancy Pelosi and Dr. Jane Goodall. McMurry assistant chaplain Rev. Dr. Russell Miller and McMurry student Anthony Avina will also attend the conference.
