Geoff Haney

ABILENE, TEXAS, March 26, 2024 – Following a competitive, nationwide search process, McMurry University proudly announces the appointment of Geoff Haney as the incoming Dean of the Walter F. and Virginia Johnson School of Business. Set to assume his new role on April 1, 2024, Haney will spearhead the expansion and development of the business school’s academic programs as McMurry looks to its second century and implements the University’s new strategic plan.

With a focus on fostering entrepreneurial education and hands-on learning, Haney is committed to providing McMurry students with opportunities for experiential learning. “It is vital for McMurry’s Johnson School of Business to forge strong ties in the marketplace, enabling our students to bridge theory with real-world application,” remarked Geoff Haney. “As we aim to be the most innovative business school in the Big Country, we will continue shaping the next generation of business leaders.”

Previously serving as CEO and partner of Cape & Son, a successful commodity trading and logistics company, Haney began his career as a trader and as CEO transitioned the company to a strategic buyer in 2021. He currently serves as a director for First Financial Bank Abilene, participated in the Texas Agricultural Lifetime Leadership Program and has served in various industry leadership roles.

McMurry University’s Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty Dr. Matt Draud shared, “Geoff’s business and community leadership brings immeasurable value in today’s classroom, aligning with McMurry’s innovative approach to prioritize real, hands-on business expertise. What impresses me most about Geoff is his genuine depth of experience and passion for the students. He embodies our mission and will be an excellent leader for the Johnson School of Business.”

Haney is passionate about entrepreneurship, community service and the betterment of Abilene, the Big Country, and Texas. He is a past chair of United Way of Abilene and vice chair of United Way of Abilene Foundation and currently serves on the boards of Community Foundation of Abilene and Hendrick Medical Center Foundation.  Haney is a graduate of Texas Tech University, and he and his wife are the proud parents of Davis, Addie, and Frances.
