About the Honors Program

The McMurry University Honors Program provides an enriched academic experience for motivated and high-achieving students who want to challenge themselves intellectually and engage more deeply in their studies.

Honors courses emphasize critical thinking, creativity, and discussion in small classroom environments where students work closely with faculty mentors. The program encourages students to explore ideas across disciplines while developing strong research, analytical, and communication skills.

Students in the program often participate in research, study abroad, leadership, athletics, and the arts, creating a dynamic college experience that extends beyond the classroom.

Honors students also benefit from competitive scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 per year that recognize academic achievement and support continued success at McMurry.

The Honors Program offers two pathways for students seeking an enhanced academic experience.

University Honors is a four-year honors experience designed for incoming first-year students and integrates honors coursework throughout the undergraduate curriculum.

Departmental Honors allows students to pursue advanced academic work within their major discipline.

Both pathways culminate in an honors thesis, an independent research or creative project completed under the guidance of faculty mentors.

Honors students complete specialized coursework designed to strengthen research, writing, and critical thinking skills.

The program’s capstone experience is the Honors Thesis, in which students conduct original research or produce a creative project in their field of study. This experience prepares students for graduate study, professional programs, and leadership opportunities.

Students accepted into the Honors Program may qualify for Honors scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 per year.

These scholarships recognize academic achievement and may be combined with other McMurry scholarships and financial aid packages.

Students interested in the Honors Program must first apply for admission to McMurry University.

Typical qualifications include:

  • Top 5% of graduating high school class

  • Approximately 3.85 weighted GPA

  • 27 ACT or 1280 SAT (or equivalent academic achievement)

Applicants complete an Honors Program application that includes an essay, academic recommendation, and interview.

Students interested in joining the Honors Program should apply to McMurry University and then complete the Honors Program application through the admissions portal.
