About the FAFSA

Each year, the federal government provides more than $150 billion in financial aid to help students pay for college. To be considered for this funding, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The FAFSA is free to complete and is your gateway to the largest source of college financial assistance. By submitting the FAFSA, you may qualify for:

  • Federal grants (money that does not have to be repaid)

  • Federal Work-Study opportunities

  • Federal student loans (typically repaid after you leave school)

Completing the FAFSA also helps determine eligibility for many state and institutional aid programs.

FAFSA Application Steps

  1. Create Your FSA ID
Before starting the FAFSA, create your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID at studentaid.gov. Both the student and one parent (for dependent students) must have an FSA ID to sign and submit the FAFSA electronically.
  2. Complete the FAFSA Each Year (Beginning October 1)
Submit a new FAFSA annually to be considered for federal, state, and institutional aid.
  3. Add McMurry University
Be sure to list McMurry University on your FAFSA so we can receive your information and prepare your financial aid offer.
  4. Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT)
When completing the FAFSA, use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to securely transfer tax information directly from the IRS. For security purposes, your tax data will not be visible—fields will display “Transferred from the IRS” once successfully imported.

Alternative Option:
If you cannot use the DRT, you may request and submit an official IRS Tax Return Transcript.
