About the Program

The McMurry nursing program prepares graduates to serve as Registered Nurses in all specialties and as nursing generalists. Our School of Nursing is located just next to Hendrick Medical Center, the largest healthcare facility in the region serving 24 counties, which allows our students dedicated space and close access to the Hendrick facilities for their clinical rotations. With a 96% first-time NCLEX national licensure exam pass rate and full accreditation and approval through the Texas Board of Nursing and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, our goal is to prepare you for a successful career in nursing.

McMurry University and Hendrick Health have joined together to combat the national nursing shortage. By committing to four years of service with Hendrick after graduation, McMurry nursing students working on their Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) can access up to $28,000 in financial support over two years, which can be combined with other aid to graduate without little or no debt. Envision yourself starting at McMurry and then embarking on a fulfilling career with a top-notch healthcare system, all with your education fully funded.

Check out our School of Nursing’s simulation lab, which enables students to acquire real-world patient care skills in a safe environment.

Every student at McMurry is assigned a dedicated Student Success Coach, who will support them throughout their entire time at McMurry. Nursing students have a specific Success Coach who works alongside the School of Nursing to ensure students are set up for a successful transition into their Nursing classes.

After starting in the School of Nursing, our students complete clinical rotations at Hendrick Medical Center. Students will work with patients alongside the Hendrick staff  to gain experience in several nursing specialties.

Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing to transition to full McMurry ownership

Though final approval is still pending, the Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing (PHSSN) Consortium between Hardin-Simmons and McMurry Universities is set to end in the spring of 2025. PHSSN is soon to be under sole partnership with McMurry University as HSU works to establish its own nursing education program in-house. This comes after the mid-2010s departure of Abilene Christian University from that same consortium for similar reasons. PHSSN Programs Director Dr. Marcia Straughn said the change will not impact the services or staffing the school has to offer.
